Date Added: 10/09/2022
A proclamation reading for the new monarch will be given by Sandy Town Council Mayor, Cllr Martin Pettitt at 2pm on Sunday 11 September outside St Swithun’s Church. It will be one of a series of similar events in towns and cities throughout the nation and all are welcome to attend.
The proclamation of a new monarch is an age-old ceremony last performed in February 1952 on the Accession of Queen Elizabeth II.
The proclamation will first be read first from the balcony at St James Palace above Friary Court by the Garter King of Arms (principal advisor to the monarch on matters of ceremony and heraldry) on Saturday 10th September. The Garter King of Arms then proceeds to make the proclamation at other London locations.
On the next day, the proclamation is read at 12pm in Cardiff, Belfast, and Edinburgh.
The Bedfordshire County proclamation will be read at 1pm by the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Lady Jane Clifford at Harper Square in Bedford, with proceedings starting at 12.30pm. Town and Parish Councils across the county will then make their own proclamations from 14.00 at their own discretion.
During the period of proclamations, starting with the initial event in London, flags will be raised back to full mast between. They are subsequently lowered at 1pm on Sunday. They then remain at half-mast until the morning after the state funeral.
